I was in the office for a while on Saturday when I noticed two members of Life Assembly Church in our Economic Development Department putting the finishing touches on some donated renovation work. It occurred to me that we (i.e., me) could do a much better job in telling our citizens what an absolutely wonderful job they've done in donating money, materials, time and resources to our city over the last year. I simply cannot remember all the things that various individuals and groups have done to step up to assist our city, but at the risk of leaving a few out, here's some that I can remember:
Kroger and Publix have donated food for nearly every ribbon cutting the city has done this year;
Ray Daniels at Chick-Fil-A has served great meals to various groups including serving a luncheon to our own staffers;
Commissioner Nicely and Paul Degges, TDOT's Chief Engineer were instrumental in securing a waiver of $250k for an outstanding bill associated with the I-40/N. Mt. Juliet Road Interstate project for the slip ramp;
First Tennessee Bank donated $4.5k to renovate the Police Department Training Room; the Wilson Bank and Regents Bank also led the way with donating thousands in saving bonds for our employee of the month program. Regents also donated a bike for the Special Census campaign.
Panattoni donated $2k for the flag set at Charlie Daniels; Panattoni is also donating materials and work to construct an extension on to the Rec Center which should be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to our citizens;
Tom Needham of Needham's Nursery donated hundreds of dollars worth of plants surrounding city hall and CD Rec Center. Tom also donated the state flags that drape the Police Memorial to the left of City Hall, and kicked in thousands of his own funds for the 4 July fireworks;
Joe Wooten donated the concrete and work to install a walkway surrounding the Police Memorial;
Jason Brockman donated plants for the sign at the front of City Hall;
Mrs. Marlinda Augelli donated countless hours and her tremendous artistic talent to paint a large outside scene at the Charlie Daniels Rec Center;
Dr. Kaelin donated over thousands of dollars of items to start the Teen Center at Charlie Daniels Park;
Carl Black Chevy for the Tahoe SUV for the next year for official use;
Lofton Creek Records and Webster & Associates PR for the very nice and much needed new podium in the City courtroom;
So far over 30 citizens have donated $75 each to buy a brick at the new Animal Shelter. We invite more to take advantage of this legacy item.
We've got 19 citizens still working towards volunteering with WEMA to fulfill MJ's contract for expanded fire protection. Many Thanks!
Beazer Homes is donating 12 acres for park space across from the new MJ High School, plus nearly $70k to install a walking path along the creek;
The heirs of the Wiley Estate are donating 12 acres, appraised at around $375k, on S. Greenhill Road, to be used as park space and a nature preserve;
Furniture Unlimited donated thousands of dollars of furniture for the front lobby;
More than 70 citizens stepped up in September to make our city a better place to live by performing acts of kindness during Patriot's Day;
To keep tax dollars here in MJ, many businesses are participating in our City Employee Discount program;
University Med Center donated lots of time and materials for a city employee health fair; finally, as noted above,
Reverend Andrew Wharton and the members of Life Assembly Church have donated what we estimate to be over $10k in time and materials to totally renovate the offices of our Economic Development Director. This is the first place a prospective business sees when they visit City Hall. With Life Assembly's help it is now a place we can be tremendously proud of.
There are many more, and to those that I've failed to mention, but to all we offer our sincere thanks.
I mention these to not only thank each and every one, but to give our citizens a view of what we in City Hall see each and every day; a community without parallel for its kindness, caring and compassion.

Good morning Randy. It is nice to see and hear about. I can only speculate how mind consuming and broad scope your task of leadership must be as you facilitate the task and people of the city. I am thankful for you and heart felt desire to make MJ a wonderful community. I hope others we see that they can give a little and make a difference and find a way to use what they have to invest in the city of MJ to increase our common good. Thanks to all the caring and giving citizens.
